Very informative Stephen, thank you for the detailed research!

I have the new Berry, and like it alot.  I have an older one that I did grind down some to get a slightly finer point.. but discovered that the heat generated by the  grinding weakened those tiny tips and it promptly  broke off.   I still use it for some things.

The other Berry staple removers, #120 and 120.5, (noooo - I  don't know what the difference is in them)  I use often as well.  But have long ago chose to  deep six a damaged/broken tool or revamp it for other purposes rather than let them build up in my toolbox.

Cheryl. I'm a little confused. Am I just not informed? I was not aware that the Berry Staple Remover ever had a numbering system like that(i.e. 120, 120.5, etc.)

I see that Osborne has those numbers:
OSBORNE STAPLE KNOCKER #120

OSBORNE STAPLE LIFTER #120 1/2

OSBORNE STAPLE REMOVER #124

Are you sure those staple removers you had were Berry's? Or am I just missing something?

Just for clarification, whenever I say "Berry Staple Remover", I mean the genuine Berry, that has the Berry label on it.

Whenever I say "Berry Type" Staple Remover, I'm referring to the Osborne #124 Staple Remover, which looks just like the Berry, but has the Osborne label on it.

Best Wishes,
Stephen

Interesting topic. I have an old Berry's staple lifter that I have used for so long, that the wood handle is about half the original size. I have bought several new ones over the years (don't remember whether they were Berry or Osborne). The points broke off on every one of them inside of a year. My old "stubby" one just keeps on tickin'.

I have a total of 4 Berry's.  The older ones (I believe original) have what appears to be the manufacturer's date stamped in the tin collar.  I have 2 of those the oldest 1 - 77 has a broken tooth.  The next oldest 3 - 83 is still in excellent condition.  They both have sharper points and provide more excellent service.  The other two have or had Berry stenciled in the wooden handle and are not as user friendly.  I do not have the Osborne copy, but I do have the Osborne that Cheryl has mentioned.  It works pretty good and sometimes I pull it out and use it.  I also have some other types that I use on occasion.

I  purchased a Osborn  copy of berry because it was cheaper years ago at least 15 years . Bought it from C&S upholstery supply in Savannah Ga. The next time I asked about the  copy  of berry they didn't Carry it anymore . They said Berry filed a patten  lawsuit  against  Osborn never saw a  Osborn  . or a  staple remover with  Osborn  on it . Looked at several old ones I have and some didn't`t have a  label on it . Not sure where it came from.
I have one  similar to the  Stanley bostick .will  try to find it and take a pick tomorrow .

Stephen,

Interesting thread.

The upholsterer I help uses a Berry type (not sure of brand) as his favorite.  His handle is worn down from tapping with his side cutters.  I tried using it, but didn't like it, I think because I tried to manhandle it rather than using something to tap it under the staple.

I have a 120.5 that was the first one I bought and like it, but you better watch out for those slips.....ouch!

I have another that I recently found and like it probably the best and use it the most.  It is on sale now for half what I gave for my first one...I bought one on sale too for a spare.  Just curious if anyone on here has used one.  The handle is very comfortable.

It's called a Doublerock.  There is a video at the above link that shows it being used.  I also have their foam hole cutter and staple setter.

 Hey gang,
I've also mentioned the Double-Rock tool in the past. I haven't had need for one in quite some time but I do think it's a well thought out tool in the right application. A good buy. ... Berry is still the tops for over-all trace demands, hands down...
I don't know where this tool was purchased. My coordinator from the state capitol gave me this as a gift last year, telling me he and his co-workers use this tool "all the time." It no way replaces the Berry but it's pretty sweet for wide staples, or multiple layers you can get under. The blade has some flex which I've not fully tested. Ron says you can pry with some degree of force and safety. It bends with some pretty stiff resistance. As you push the tip under the staple it lifts it evenly, and completely free (for the most part). Again, not my first choice off the tool rack, but a great tool in it's place.
 Later, "Buck"
